Two Day Peer Group Meeting Concludes

A spirited two day meeting of MSP-Ignite's Peer Group Beta concluded yesterday. The eight members present shared thoughts, experiences and challenges on topics that included:

  •    Determining staffing levels
  •    Managed Service pricing formulas
  •    Customer Acquisition
  •     Account Management/VCIO responsibilities
  •     Transitioning/staying out of the trenches
  •     Standard Operating Procedures
  •     Org Chart comparisons
  •     And more

According to Ken May of Swift Chip in Ventura, Ca “I can honestly say, without hyperbole, that after my first face to face peer group, I got more actionable items and better advice than I'd gotten out of 4 years of attending conferences! Highly recommended.”

And Phyllis Winters of Information Technology Group “It is amazing how many takeaways I came back with after our first meeting. It is wonderful to be part of a group that is so knowledgeable, experienced and willing to provide their insight into the many issues we face every day.”

The meeting was a tremendous success.

MSP-Ignite Kicks Off The First Peer Group For "Micro/Start-Up" Business Owners

Most peer groups require member organizations to have a minimum number of employees and/or minimum revenue numbers. Start-ups and smaller companies generally have more questions than answers and are simply not in a position to offer as much advice as more established companies. Of course, this does not mean that they cannot benefit from being part of a group.

This week, MSP-Ignite kicked off one of their peer groups and designed it for this underserved segment. The group will be facilitated by MSP-Ignite President, Steve Alexander, who has twenty-five years’ experience building and selling two MSP's of his own. Alexander has also consulted with dozens of IT Service Providers of all sizes. "IT providers with less than five employees face different challenges than more established companies. They also bring a new, fresher approach to many of today's challenges. By facilitating a group designed for organizations with limited resources and experience we'll be able to focus on those unique challenges and provide more of a group consulting environment than pure peer group" said Alexander.

Kicked Off another Peer Group

The key to a successful peer group is having members that are willing to share.

During today's kickoff call for Peer Group Beta the initial members of the group proved that they are willing to share it all with each other. In addition to approving three additional members the group shared organizational charts, questioned each other on whether or not staff was in the ideal roles, discussed next hires and shared financials. Can't wait until our two day meeting in December to take it to the next level. The members of this group are all established MSP's, use different PSA's and RMM tools. As a result, the conversations are more about "if" and "why" than "How to". Really spirited and informative conversation that clearly benefited all of the members.

Back To My Old Stomping Ground, In The Virtual Sense

When we agreed to help Canandaigua, NY based Tri-Delta Resources with their Autotask implementation the good feelings came in from all directions.

For starters, the engagement was the result of a good deed I did at the yearly Autotask Community Live Conference. With a dozen clients at the event and three speaking spots I had very little downtime at this event. When asked to give up some of that precious time to join a group of prospects I didn’t expect there would be much personal value. Our host however has been extremely good to us over the years and I find it hard to say no when they ask for our assistance.

When I first met Robert Abrams of Tri-Delta Resources he informed me that his company was from a small town upstate that I probably never heard of. We hit it off immediately when I told him how many college classes I missed by joining my roommate at the racetrack there. While I haven’t been back in years, the fact that Tri-Delta opened around the same time that I left the area gave us a connection that made this one of the more enjoyable engagements ever.

As Robert explained how different Tri-Delta was from most of the companies that I work with the challenges and fun grew. While Tri-Delta has been extremely successful in their 30 year history they simply did not track the same information that most of our clients wanted to track. The good news was that Robert was more than willing to be the conduit between the new ideas and the old. When the massive snow crippled the area just north of the area he also showed his dedication as a First Responder by braving the elements with his team from the local Fire Department for a few days without missing a beat during the process.

501cTECH Empowering Nonprofits Through Technology

After spending two days helping the team at 501cTech in D.C. I came away truly impressed. This group of dedicated IT Professionals have a passion for giving back to the community that they live and work in that is unbelievable.

At 501cTECH, technology is not only their business, but also their passion to leverage IT expertise to help change the world around them. They approach their work with seasoned business discipline, combined with a healthy dose of idealism. Because 501cTECH also is a nonprofit organization, their team understands the challenges faced by fellow nonprofits. They “get” that funding and staff are limited, prioritized for program delivery, and that no two organizations are alike. To achieve the maximum return for their clients, all technology solutions are thoughtfully designed and tailored to fit each client’s unique requirements. Their goal is guide our clients to take advantage of cutting-edge technology to better manage their nonprofit, stretch their dollars further, and perhaps most importantly, take away the worry, allowing them to focus more money and energy on advancing their core missions.

While working with them to maximize their use of Auto task I was blown away by the staff’s commitment to the nonprofit community they support and belong to. I’m proud that they have decided to utilize MSP-Ignite’s experience helping Managed Service Providers and have learned as much from them as I hope they do from me.

I strongly recommend that any nonprofit organization in the D.C. area that is looking for IT assistance check them out at http://501ctech.org/
